RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-28-2018

We're talking about a 17 million euros film sold to various distributors across the globe. Distributors that could sur the producers with good reason for damaging the value of their purchase by showing it for free on the internet. It's no solution.

What intrigues me most in this, and nobody seems to notice, is that Paulo Branco is suing the Cannes film festival, but not the french distributor that will release the film stateside the same day !
As the press release goes : "Alfama Films Production has been granted permission to obtain a writ against the Cannes Film Festival ", so it must mean it hasn't been granted permission to do the same against the distributor ! For what reason, I can't say but at the moment it means that the film is free to screen in France, and perhaps elsewhere (the Spanish release has been announced for June 1st). Perhaps due to the clause in the contract pointed to by the producers saying that "no legal conflict could delay, in whatever way, the production or exploitation of the film".

RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-28-2018

According to an amendment in this news article, Amazon are no longer involved with the film: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-filmfestival-cannes-don-quixote/terry-gilliams-quixote-film-faces-new-legal-hurdle-at-cannes-idUSKBN1HY2BO

RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-28-2018

It could mean 2 things. Either they say they dropped it altogether or they say they're just not involved with the producing (which is true). I often read american articles thinking that this film is an Amazon production, which it's not.
Remember that we got the rumor that A24 was partnering with Amazon on this film for US distribution so maybe the partnership went further and Amazon just sold them the film ??

RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-28-2018

Maybe they only have the streaming rights but not the cinema or DVD rights.

RE: The Making of Quixote - cclark - 04-28-2018

A24 was briefly thought to be purchased by Apple. The deal is not happening (yet?), but if A24 is still looking for a potential buyer that could affect any future deals with Amazon.

I'm wondering if there may be another potential buyer of A24 on the horizon, and Amazon is just passing along any future film deals it has with A24 to the buyer, as it may get streaming rights from A24 anyway.

Here's an article about the Apple/A24 deal: http://www.indiewire.com/2018/03/apple-acquisition-a24-john-hodges-1201945328/

P.S. I was definitely joking about the film being released for free on the Internet. In a perfect world, I'd rather see this film become Gilliam's most film successful both financially and artistically.

RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-29-2018

Maybe that's why they haven't announced anything regarding the film ? But apparently A24 is going to film markets around the world with the film on its line-up...

In other related news, Juan Branco, Paulo Branco's son and lawyer, is attacking specifically Cannes festival president on twitter : https://twitter.com/anatolium/status/989876571543687168
(he's reacting to an interview of Pierre Lescure who said :
"We have announced [Gilliam's film] as the closing film with a simultaneous wide release because that was the possibility which was presented to us. That way, the link between the Festival and the cinema in theaters will be honored. If no one can oppose it, the screening will take place, of course. Otherwise, we will respect the law. But it was important to support Terry Gilliam, for whom this film is the project of a lifetime. Cannes is by nature on the side of the artists. And it's not the methods of intimidation by Paulo Branco and his son that will make us change our minds" )

Yep, in Paris, apparently. Good to know they're starting the marketing for good. I wonder if they wait for the judgement on may 7th to drop the 2nd trailer or if they'll show it earlier.

RE: The Making of Quixote - cclark - 04-29-2018

More dates are being added to the film's release:
Spain—2018
France—19 May 2018
France—19 May 2018 (Cannes International Film Festival)
Belgium—25 July 2018
Netherlands—26 July 2018

RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-30-2018

Warner Bros. Spain has announced that the Spanish release is scheduled for June 1st. The film will also be release in Switzerland the same day as in France (at least in french-speaking Switzerland).
