RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-25-2018 That last image looks quite painful, but Gilliam likes his actors to suffer for art! ![]() ![]() RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-25-2018 Here's more about the Branco case, he's wanting the French courts to ban the film from being screened at Cannes: https://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/entertainment/terry-gilliams-cursed-don-quixote-could-be-banned-from-cannes Also, Branco's son is representing him as lawyer, who also represents Julian Assange. Seeing as Assange has been stuck in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012, I have to question Branco Jr's ability as lawyer. ![]() RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-26-2018 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-26-2018 (04-25-2018, 11:14 PM)Donald McKinney Wrote: Here's more about the Branco case, he's wanting the French courts to ban the film from being screened at Cannes: https://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/entertainment/terry-gilliams-cursed-don-quixote-could-be-banned-from-cannesFor those who didn't follow the recent developments, deadline sums it up : http://deadline.com/2018/04/cannes-don-quixote-movie-legal-battle-screening-terry-gilliam-1202377265/ RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-27-2018 Strangely, Amazon Studios didn't bring Quixote at their CinemaCon presentation : https://www.screendaily.com/news/cinemacon-amazon-studios-teases-chilling-suspiria-footage/5128628.article RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-27-2018 (04-19-2018, 12:03 PM)Donald McKinney Wrote: It looks like the French are giving a two fingered salute to Paulo Branco by releasing it in French cinemas as well. I think they way Gilliam let him go is what Branco is calling into question. I don't think it has anything to do with the current incarnation of the film, Branco obviously feels Gilliam owes him for his 4 months of service. As for Amazon not screening the footage, I thought A24 had bought into the US Distribution? RE: The Making of Quixote - bruttenholm - 04-27-2018 If you have some skills in law speech, you can check the judgement in appeal for the case of Recorded Pictures against Paulo Branco in the UK, it states clearlishly where the problem between Branco and the producers lies : http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2018/767.html What I understood (and to make it short) is that Recorded Pictures Company granted an option on the screenplay to Paulo Branco's society Alfama films in 2016. When things went south between Gilliam and Branco in august 2016, Recorded Pictures decided not to renew the option and let it expire so that they could grant it to another producer in october 2016. BUT for Branco, this expiration date isn't valid : indead a contract clause ("clause 16") extends the option automatically in case of legal dispute. The legal dispute being the parting ways of Gilliam and Branco in the first place, Branco and the justice consider that his option whas still valid at the time Recorded Pictures granted it to another producer. I hope it's clear... Though 1)the justice in UK recognized that Branco have rights on the film but in France the judgement in appeal hasn't been pronounced yet and 2)Another matter entirely is whether those judgements mean Branco can stop the exploitation of the film. But then I don't know what happens with the other producers who were surely granted the same kind of deal... The rights can't belong to 2 companies at once, and you have to wonder at which sum Branco would settle when being paid in royalties could mean big bucks.... (04-27-2018, 12:45 PM)Donald McKinney Wrote: As for Amazon not screening the footage, I thought A24 had bought into the US Distribution?P.S : For Amazon and A24, I read that the deal was actually A24 partnering with Amazon studios to release the film. Neither one company or the other talked about the film in the last weeks though. RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-27-2018 There have been other producers attached, like Adrián Guerra, when he couldn't deliver the goods, he was shown the door, but at least he wasn't as cut up about it as Branco is. It seems like this boils down to two contracts contradicting one another, Gilliam's said one thing, Branco's said another. Surely as the project originated with Gilliam, he should have the upper hand, but as the UK courts have recognised Branco's copyright claim, but not yet in the French courts, will this affect it ever getting released in the UK? I wonder if Amazon and A24 have suddenly got cold feet over the court case? Either way, Gilliam has called out to his Facebook fans for help: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1748647745194032&id=256730041052484 RE: The Making of Quixote - cclark - 04-27-2018 If the film is barred from being released, or even shown at Cannes, someone should "accidentally" leak it onto the Internet. ![]() RE: The Making of Quixote - Donald McKinney - 04-27-2018 (04-27-2018, 09:00 PM)cclark Wrote: If the film is barred from being released, or even shown at Cannes, someone should "accidentally" leak it onto the Internet. Now THERE'S an idea, that happened a few years back with another film premiered at Cannes. Unlawful Killing, directed by Keith Allen and produced by Victor Lewis-Smith, it can't be shown in the UK as lawyers requested dozens of cuts because of comments about the Royal Family, and how they were complicit in Princess Diana's death. It's doing the round on the net, and Lewis-Smith seems to encourage it, even if he's not personally sharing it. ![]() |
