Maybe he's doing the right thing, there's almost no sign of agitation on twitter anymore.

He has supporters on Facebook, and they found the photo amusing.

Yeah that's good.
Also Gilliam commented a lot more than usual under his last 2 facebook posts, he's apparently trying to course correct the conversation a little bit.

This might explain why Quixote could be shown out of competition at Cannes: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cannes-artistic-director-banning-netflix-competition-why-he-allowed-streaming-movies-last-year-1096800

On the other hand Amazon is different from Netflix in that they're teaming up with indie distributors like A24 for wide theatrical distribution, while Netflix prefers to have a limited release (if any) just to make the bare minimum of qualifications for theatrical film awards: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/03/steven-spielberg-netflix-oscars

As you said, that's just for Netflix, Amazon studios releases its film in theaters. Besides, Amazon is just handling distribution of Quixote in America : the film will still be released theatrically worldwide by other distributors so it would absolutely not be banned from competition in Cannes.

Right. I forgot Amazon wasn't part of the worldwide distribution.

According to ComingSoon.net, Amazon Studios has acquired distribution rights for the US, Canada and the UK, and Telemunchen for Germany and Austria: http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/924721-first-the-man-who-killed-don-quixote-photo-revealed

I'm guessing Amazon will let someone else fully distribute the film for cinemas and DVD in the UK. Amazon have a partnership with StudioCanal in UK, it might be them, but maybe not.

At least Amazon give their films cinema releases, unlike Netflix who have kept cinema releases at an arms length. HOWEVER, Netflix have the rights to Martin Scorsese's upcoming gangster epic The Irishman, and Scorsese has PROMISED it will be released in cinemas. The budget on that is set to be anywhere upwards of $175 million, so it'll need to be seen by the widest audience possible.

In France, speculation is growing to guess what film will open Cannes festival... Here allociné (the most important french film website) is betting on Asghar Farhadi's or Gilliam's next to be selected : http://www.allocine.fr/article/fichearticle_gen_carticle=18671922.html (both are scheduled -for now- to open in May in France)
The article finishes by stating that Woody Allen is off the running because of the atmosphere and the fact that Cate Blanchette is very supportive of the Metoo movement... Though we can aslo wonder if this situation is not harming Gilliam's chances after his comments from last week.

Yeah, I can still see The Man Who Killed Don Quixote getting it's Cannes premiere, despite Gilliam's comments and the legal troubles with Paulo Branco. As for Woody Allen, he has premiered some of his films at Cannes, but with his new one, A Rainy Day In New York, it's uncertain if it will get a release, let alone a festival premiere. Woody's deal with an increasingly bewildered Amazon still stands, but they've put money into into the film, they'll want to see a return. Besides, what if it's actually good? What if it's up there with Blue Jasmine or Midnight in Paris? Do Amazon still dump it or give it a chance?

Saw this tweet ths morning, but I haven't been able to dig up any articles with more info: https://twitter.com/OnTheCroisette/status/981157714016505857

Quote:The fight between Terry Gilliam and legendary producer Paulo Branco over The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will be settled tomorrow in court in Paris but for the time being the film is "blocked" once again!
