Is Birdman the best film that Terry Gilliam never made? The movie’s woozy cinematography, extreme close-ups, perverse and claustrophobic production design, and air of madness and magic realism are all Gilliam’s hallmarks, and it’s hard to watch the film and not think of Brazil, The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys. Perhaps after the success of Birdman and with his newfound Hollywood clout, Alejandro Iñárritu should collaborate with Gilliam on the Don Quixote movie that Gilliam has been trying to get going for the last twenty years.

I haven't seen Birdman yet, but I'm all for anybody helping Gilliam in getting Quixote made.

I wasn't thinking of Gilliam when I watched Birdman... but I sensed echoes of Fellini & Bunuel.

I've seen Birdman by now, and the only connection I could make in hindsight is that it's set in NYC, just like Fisher King.
