Fascinating read there. From the excerpt, it appears that O'Brien had some sort of ego that turned out to be too much for Gilliam to swallow. At least he came off better than Sid Sheinberg.
HandMade's death was more to do with their desire to become more of a "commercial" studio, distancing themselves away from the original "artist friendly" intention. Even if those low-quality films were more of a ways to keep the studio afloat, O'Brien really needed better financial aid.
