Eric Idle corroborates Sarah Polley's account of Munchausen

In light of Gilliam's recent controversial statements on #MeToo, Angus Johnston dug up Sarah Polley's email to Gilliam when he was shooting Tideland: https://twitter.com/studentactivism/stat...1614487558

Eric Idle joined the conversation and had this to say:
Quote:She was right. She was in danger. Many times. It was amazing we never lost anyone. It was me, her and Jack Purvis in the back of the boat. The explosion scared the horse which backed into us, and the brilliant rider took it overboard.

Here's the AFP interview that got Gilliam in hot water:

It's a well known fact that this production was chaotic to say the least. Now making it all Gilliam's fault (and not, for example, stuntmen's) is another matter entirely.

Sarah says as much in her letter. That doesn't mean she wasn't in danger, which is something Gilliam denied.

The only reason it's being brought up now is the cavalier way Gilliam spoke about the casting couch culture in Hollywood and Harvey Weinstein's abuse of power as they relate to the MeToo movement. Gilliam could have gotten away with just saying that Matt Damon "got beaten to death" (that's a bit of a stretch) for saying things that, while may be correct, Damon chose the wrong time to say them. I also believe that Matt Damon is a decent guy, and he and Ben Affleck's production company are now offering inclusion riders, which is a win for the #MeToo movement. Gilliam's own comments also, while are basically correct (the casting couch exists, abuse of power has always existed) could have been a little more tactful and a little less defeatist/cynical. He inadvertently proved his other point which is that there is a "witch hunt" side to the MeToo movement which got a huge backlash. That may be true (it certainly is true on social media), but that doesn't mean the movement itself should be discounted. So far, people like Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Bill Cosby are all free men. Justice has yet to be served. Once that happens, the social media pitchforks will point their attention elsewhere.

Hopefully Gilliam will clarify his statements during his Quixote press at Cannes.

So what ? He wasn't in the boat, he didn't see it, he's clueless, maybe... People on twitter are now digging this letter to say Gilliam has a habit of hurting actresses. Sarah Polley has every right to be upset but it doens't mean Gilliam's an asshole.
By the way, much bigger productions than Gilliam's have much much more dramatic problems... A stuntwoman died on the last deadpool, 2 pilots died on the last tom cruise film, a stuntman fell into coma on the shoot of quantum of solace, another stuntman was left paralysed on the shoot of a harry potter film... Yet in thoses cases the directors are never pointed at or criticized... I don't see why Gilliam would be treated differently, when in comparison his sets seem very safe.

As for his comments and the fact that he would clarify them in Cannes... That's not the point of the moment anymore, as Barkin is issuing "accusations"/innuendos... I hope the situation will clarify sooner because at this rate I'm not sure there will be any Cannes and I'm not sure the film will be released at all.

Bruttenholm, sorry I added more to my original post after you posted.

It was his reaction to Polley's concerns that he came across as glossing over (or "gaslighting" as was used on Twitter, not exactly a word I would use for this). He also came across as glib when talking about MeToo.

Filmmaking can be a dangerous business*. Adults can make decisions for themselves, children can sometimes be too eager to please adults.

* Don't forget I broke three bones on the set of Quixote. More on that soon!
